Graham Fitkin Graham Fitkin is a leading figure in
the new wave of British and American composers who are successfully crossing
traditional audience boundaries. If a label must be applied, his music may be
called 'post-minimalist'.
It is accessible, rhythm-driven and emotional, yet underpinned always by a strong
sense of shape and argument.
Graham is one of the few composers who have ongoing agreements with a major record label. Argo (Decca) have released four all-Fitkin discs, with a fifth (of orchestral music) scheduled for release in Spring 1998. His music is performed internationally by groups such as Piano Circus, The Smith Quartet, Icebreaker, Ensemble Bash and the John Harle Band. A brilliant pianist, he also performs with his own band.
The strongly rhythmic and dramatic qualities of Fitkin's music have made him popular with choreographers. In 1994 he wrote the music for Alistair Fish, a ballet specially commissioned by BBC2. In early 1995, the music he wrote for René Clair's film Entr'act was taken up and choreographed by the New York City Ballet. A Fitkin score for the Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company, Palimpsest, is featured extensively in a new film about the company entitled Awayday.
